How I got here...

My experience with stress was a devastating one.

I lived with a fair amount of pressure beginning with my first job at the age of 15. From then on, I gravitated towards more and more intensely stressful jobs. They made me feel alive, connected and important.

By the time I was 17, the stress had escalated significantly, and I was having full-on panic attacks. The attacks started happening when I was in line at the bank, then at the grocery store, in the mall and eventually even while driving my car. I felt like I was losing control and that I was going to faint or black out. It was frightening.

I went on like that for years until I began a meditation practice at the recommendation of a friend. This was the beginning of a significant lifestyle change. I started practicing yoga and meditation regularly. Over time, my panic attacks subsided, and my anxiety became much more manageable.  I thought I was out of the woods, however, I wasn't ready to let go of the rush I got from stress.

When I was 31, I moved to an Ashram...

and the intensity quadrupled.  There was so much to do.  I didn't know how to say no and didn't feel like I was enough.  This was a recipe for disaster. Stress was very much a part of my identity and gave me a sense of belonging and self-worth.

It all culminated at the age of 37 when I had a complete physical breakdown. When it first hit me, I couldn't move. Literally. I couldn't move even to get help. I was broken...really broken. It was scary as hell. Over time, with the help of Chinese Tonic Herbs, I began to gain some level of functionality.

After three months, sitting on the ground and picking tiny weeds in a vegetable garden was my "exercise". I was slowly gaining strength.

At the height of that physical breakdown, the thought that kept going through my mind was "I'm dying".  During that time, that
felt very real.

I remember one day, I heard my spiritual teacher say something that changed everything for me;  "You become what you think."

Wait...what?!!   In that moment, I totally got what the mind/body connection was all about.  No wonder I wasn't healing!  From that moment forward, I never had the thought "I'm dying" again. That was the beginning of my real journey toward healing.

I began to incorporate self-care into my life.

This was completely new for me.  I was introduced to Transpersonal Energy Healing Therapy (TEHT) and embraced the process fully. Over time, I was able to understand why stress had been such an important part of my life and identity.

TEHT got me in touch with events from my early years that left me with extreme insecurity, self-doubt and low self-esteem. Once this connection was made, the unraveling began, and the deep healing could occur.  Now when things ramp up in my life, I am able to see it for what it is and remain grounded and calm.  The need for stress to make me feel any sense of worth is gone.
